Oberblegisee – Glarus, Switzerland

Destination: Oberblegisee (1422 m)  Starting point: Brunnenberg (1000 m) Elevation: est. 422 m  Distance: est. 6.1 km  Duration: est. 4:25:37 Moving time: 1:48:49

Felt really good to go hiking second time in one week and no muscle aches! Sunday’s hike was kind of an easy one except that it was a really hot day. It felt like 35 degree Celsius. Strong sun sucks the energy out of you. The season change this year is quite drastic. Seems like winter moved straight to summer skipping Spring. Few weeks ago it was still chilly but the couple of days were unbearable. We slept with our windows and doors wide open.

On Sunday, we went to Oberblegisee in Glarus which is about one hour drive from our place. Most of the mountains cable cars around this area are still not in operation especially higher peaks because there are still snow on higher altitude. Lucky for us the cable car at Luchsingen (516 m) is in operation. So we took the cable car from Luchsingen (516 m) to Brunnenberg (1’000 m) which was our starting point.

STARTING POINT – CABLE CAR

We took the cable car at Luchsingen to Brunnenberg. The cable car operates every hour. Please check the website for operation time and ticket prices so you don’t have to wait too long at the cable car station. However, I must mention that the cable car carries maximum of 8 person or weight 400 kilogram so if there are many people wanting to take the cable car up to Brunnenberg, there might be a queue. The ride from Luchsingen to Brunnenberg takes only 6 minutes. If you are fit, you can hike up from Luchsingen to Brunnenberg which is around 500 meter elevation.

We were at Brunnenberg at around 09:15. There was no one at the Brunnenberg station besides one guy who shared the cable car with us. Contrary to Thursday when we hiked to Seealpsee & Wildkirchli, this time it was quiet and nice. The sky was clear and the surrounding mountains are showing off the details on their bodies. Although it is not the ideal lighting for photographer when the sun is high up, sometimes it works for landscape photography. Strong contrast landscape works for me.

The road up to Oberblegisee is winding gravel road. It is easy to walk on except for the last part where is steep and could cause a slip. On the way up to the mountain lake, a few groups of people passed us but the number was low. That day it was so hot, we had to stop under shaded areas to catch our breaths.

The mountains in this time of the year is so beautiful. It is still Spring in the mountains so flowers are blooming wild in open field and succulents growing under rocks. This trail towards Oberblegisee is a pleasant one and really suitable for family hiking trip. The trail is easy and straight forward. Along the trail you have clear view of farms and surrounding mountains. The way up to the lake from Brunnenberg takes about 1 – 2 hours. We were home quite early that day. Usually our hiking trip ends about 17:00 – 18:00 but this time we completed the hike and returned to Brunnenberg cable car station at est. 13:30. Enough time to take a nap at home. 🙂

Oberblegisee is a small lake in the mountains. There was a beach near the mountain cabin. We saw a few fishing hobbyist from our lunch spot. There were plenty of trees around where you could take shades if you are afraid of the sun, like me. There are a few waterfalls near the cabin but we didn’t go any nearer to the waterfalls.

We took our lunch break under a tree on a higher ground away from the main crowds on the beach. The spot we had allowed us to watch people and also the best view of the lake. We brought a binocular which we used to watch ducks swimming in the lake, dogs frolicking on the bridge, para-gliders in the skies, bridge in between mountains and waterfalls far away. If you are not interested in photography, I think buying a good binocular is a good investment.

We have long weekend again this week so stay tuned.
